Cassie Olivo is a native Austinite who has certainly grown where she was planted. She realized her passion was serving homeless animals when she encountered an Austin Pets Alive! off-site adoption site set up at a local PetSmart. She asked how she could get involved, and the rest is history!

She stalked any and all volunteer opportunities, from working in the Sarcoptic Mange and Bottle Baby Kitten wards, until 2011 when she applied for a matchmaking position that became available. Her outgoing personality and amazing customer service skills combined with her close working knowledge about the available dogs gives her a unique ability to find a home that is perfect for any type of dog, no matter the temperament.

At the root of the no-kill mission is the notion that there is a home for EVERY pet. Learning what an adopter’s lifestyle allows for, and what temperament they have helps Cassie recommend a dog based on her daily interactions with the always changing shelter population.

One of Cassie’s best days at APA! was this last summer when a couple drove in from Killeen with a list of ten dogs they had seen on the website. Their blocky headed dog had recently passed away, and when Cassie got a hold of them, she realized that they would be perfect for Louise, one of the longest stay dogs at APA! at the time – a dog NOT on their list. Louise was a favorite among volunteers. She was also one of the first dogs to pass her Canine Good Citizen test since the program’s implementation at APA! mid-2013.

Louise needs to be in a dog only home, and these folks want one dog. Louise is very strong and loves to run, they have lots of land. She wants to get spoiled and snuggle up in front of the fireplace, these people love to buy dog sweaters. Cassie and the behavior team worked with this couple all day to make clear all of her quirks, and make sure that after almost 2 years, she was perfectly matched and going home for good.

Cassie has revolutionized the dog adoption system by combining her unique people skills with the loving and gentle hearts of the shelter dog community. She is a fashion and photography model in her off time and is always a hit at APA!’s annual Date Auction. She loves margaritas, and of course long walks on the beach.

Cassie is working on pre-veterinary coursework with the intention of becoming a shelter vet someday. When I asked what pets Cassie had of her own, she said “None. Too much responsibility.”

Come listen to Cassie teach you her spectacular matchmaking ways at the 2014 American Pets Alive! No-Kill Conference next weekend! Visit www.americanpetsalive2014.evetbrite.com for tickets and additional details!
